Selection of netted prey by piranhas, Serrasalmus spilopleura and S. marginatus (Pisces, Serrasalmidae) Biological Sciences
Agostinho, Carlos Sérgio; UFT; Marques, Elineide Eugenio; Universidade do Tocantins.
The frequency of attacks by piranhas on specimens of netted fish was analyzed from monthly catches in gill nets set out for 24 hours and checked every 8 hours, from June 1987 through May 1988, in lakes, channels, and rivers of the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil. Captured fish were identified and marks of attack by piranhas on their fins and flesh were recorded. The probability of detection of netted fishes, their body structure, and behavioral aspects were the factors determining the selective piranhas attacks. There was no significant relationship between the frequency of predator attacks and the relative abundance of the prey. Community composition was the main factor determining the attack frequency, which differed according to environment

Selection of parasitoids of the genus Trichogramma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) and parasitism at different eggs ages of Duponchelia fovealis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Biological Sciences
Paes, João Paulo Pereira; Lima, Victor Luiz Souza; Pratisolli, Dirceu; Carvalho, José Romário de; Bueno, Regiane Cristina Oliveira de Freitas.
The European pepper moth Duponchelia fovealis (Zeller, 1847) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), despite being among the principal pests of strawberries in Brazil. However, biological control methods are rarely documented for this pest. In the current study, the goal was to select promising Trichogramma strains to enable the control of D. fovealis and to determine the acceptance of different ages of host eggs by the parasitoid. In the first bioassay, evaluations were done on the biological parameters of five strains of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley and one of Trichogramma galloi Zucchi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). The best performance came from the strains, Tp18 (T. pretiosum) and Tg (T. galloi), showing parasitism and viability higher than 50 and 90%,...

Seminal characteristics of piabanha before and after induction with different hormones Biological Sciences
Garcia, Raycon Roberto Freitas; Vasconcelos, Ana Carina Nogueira; Povh, Jayme Aparecido; Ribeiro, Janessa Sampaio de Abreu; Eloy, Lidiane Raquel; Streit Junior, Danilo Pedro.
The migratory species piabanha does not reproduce in lentic environments since it requires environmental stimuli for the maturation and extrusion of gametes, and therefore hormonal induction is mandatory. Current study compares the seminal characteristics of Brycon insignis without any hormonal induction (Control - Ctrl) and with two types of hormonal inductors, or rather, carp pituitary extract (T1 - 2.5 mg kg-1 body weight) and GnRH analogues, the latter applied in two different concentrations (T2 - 0.7 mg kg-1 body weight and T3 - 1.4 mg kg-1 body weight). Post-induction analyses showed that the hormones increased the motility rate - Ctrl (95%), T1 (100%), T2 (100%) and T3 (98%),...

Single large or several small? The influence of prey size on feeding performance of Philodryas nattereri (Squamata: Serpentes) Biological Sciences
Pereira, Sara Catunda; Rodrigues, João Fabrício Mota; Borges-Nojosa, Diva Maria.
This study aimed at evaluating the energetic return and feeding time on Philodryas nattereri kept in captivity. Snakes were fed biweekly for 60 days (four feeding trials), in two different feeding treatments (single and multiple prey items). The energetic return revealed no significant difference between the feeding treatments; however, we found a negative relationship between snake size and prey handling time during a feed using multiple prey items. In P. nattereri, when large preys are as easy to find as small ones, there seems to be no difference in energetic return.

Sodium and nitrate favor the steady state of cyanobacteria in a semiarid ecosystem Biological Sciences
Oliviera, Fábio Henrique Portella Corrêa de; Dantas, Ênio Wocyli.
This study characterized steady state events (SS) in a semiarid reservoir (Brazil) dominated by cyanobacteria for 130 weeks, and evaluated the influence of different abiotic variables on their occurrence. It was hypothesized that, in semiarid reservoirs, steady state events are independent from seasonality and influenced by high nutrient concentrations, and steady state periods show low variation of species. Our data revealed the occurrence of SS events in both the dry and wet seasons. Higher concentrations of nitrate and sodium together with higher values of color favored the development of SS. Species composing the SS dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing was correlated with higher sulfate concentrations, while higher values of turbidity...

Soil seed bank during succession at an abandoned pasture in the upper Paraná river-floodplain, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i1.6391 Biological Sciences
Chapla, Tatiani Elisa; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Campos, João Batista; Instituto Ambiental do Paraná.
We evaluated density and species composition of the soil seed bank in active pasture and in secondary forest on a 10 year-old abandoned pasture to identify changes in density, richness, diversity and species composition during secondary succession of abandoned pastures. The implications of those changes for the forest recovery process were also considered. Soil samples were collected at Porto Rico island, state of Paraná, in 2007. The seedling emergence method was used. Data on active pasture collected in 1996, published by Campos and Souza (2003) were used for comparative analysis. No evidence was found of a pattern of changes in density of the soil seed bank during succession of abandoned pastures. We observed increases in richness and diversity, in the...

Spar genetic analysis of two invasive species of Cichla (Tucunaré) (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in the Paraná river basin - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i1.4855 Biological Sciences
Almeida-Ferreira, Giovanna Caputo; Cesumar; Oliveira, Alessandra Valéria de; CESUMAR; Prioli, Alberto José; UEM; Prioli, Sônia Maria Alves Pinto; UEM.
The introduction of exotic species in lake ecosystems has been greatly highlighted in the literature worldwide. Since introduction may threaten diversity of native fish, the issue turns up to be of paramount importance. Ecological effects may be predation, competition, parasitism or genetic, that is, changes in the genetic pool of populations owing to the occurrence of hybrids. Although the Tucunaré fish (Cichla) is native to the Amazon region, it can be found in other hydrographic basins in which it has been introduced. RAPD molecular marker research showed that there are two species (Cichla kelberi and C. piquiti) belonging to the genus Cichla in the rivers of the Paraná basin. Different morphotypes in the region may also be due to hybridization. Current...

Spatial and temporal fluctuation of phytoplankton functional groups in a tropical reservoir - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i3.12988 Biological Sciences
Moreti, Lívia Oliveira Ruiz; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Martos, Luana; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Bovo-Scomparin, Vânia Mara; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Rodrigues, Luzia Cleide; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
Along the horizontal axis of reservoirs are generally recognized three zones (fluvial, transition and lacustrine) with distinct hydrodynamic and physical, chemical and biological properties. Quarterly samplings were conducted in 2002, in the limnetic region from each zone, at different depths of a tropical reservoir. To test the hypothesis that highest biomass (biovolume) of phytoplankton are found in the transition zone, the PERMANOVA analysis was realized. 106 taxa were recorded. Significant differences between biovolume values of the three zones were not verified (pseudo F = 0,89; p = 0,55). Higher values of biomass were obtained in lacustrine and transition zones of the reservoir. The functional group (FG) N (Cosmarium spp.) was dominant in these...

Spatial and temporal variation of Dona Francisca reservoir (Jacuí river, Rio Grande do Sul State), a subtropical reservoir - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i3.10078 Biological Sciences
Rodrigues, Leon Maximiliano; Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense; Schwarzbold, Albano; Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Sul; Oliveira, Maria Angélica; Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.
The present study examined the behavior of a reservoir located on subtropical latitude (Dona Francisca reservoir). The limnological variables measured were dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and electric conductivity. Measurements were taken quarterly at different sampling sites along the reservoir. The results indicated the formation of longitudinal zones regarding circulation patterns and stratification, beyond the influence from the water masses of the main tributary. The vertical profiles were obtained. The behavior of the reservoir is similar to others previously studied in the country, but with shorter time-lag stratification and a narrower range, possibly due to the shorter residence time of the water, and to the latitude, where summer is shorter.
